Currently Reading, blog post by Aspasia S. Bissas. aspasiasbissas.com. Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett, Discworld, fairies, witches

A new month brings a new read! The last time I posted on the subject, I was starting on two books– one each in English and French. I ended up walking away from the French one after about 100 pages, not because it wasn’t helpful for improving my language skills, but… let’s just say it turns out I can resist some paranormal fiction, after all. On the other hand, I’m very happy to have re-read The Night Circus, which is easily on my short list of all-time best books.

Now I find myself heading back to Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. I still don’t expect to ever finish the entire series, but Lords and Ladies caught my eye, since it features a favourite character (Granny Weatherwax) and fairies. If I don’t end up enjoying this one, I probably won’t go back to Discworld again. Not for a few months, anyway 😉

Well, I finally finished Practical Magic, and while I can’t say I hated it, I do have to admit that it’s one of two books where I liked the movie better (the other one being The Princess Bride). I don’t think I’ll be rushing to read the sequel (but I’m very much on board for a movie sequel with the original cast!)

For my next read, I’ve actually chosen two books. First a re-read:

I loved this book, so I’m excited to revisit it!

The other one is a bit of a departure. Since I’m trying to improve my French skills, I keep hearing that a great way to learn another language is to read books in that language. I do have a few French books in my collection, but they’re all currently packed, so I checked to see if any e-books were available free (from reputable sources). There were a few promising options, so I picked the one that looked the most fun (and manageable for my reading level):

I can’t resist a good paranormal read 🙂 And it’s the first in a series, so I could have a lot of solid French practice ahead of me.

Currently Reading, blog post by Aspasia S. Bissas, aspasiasbissas.com. Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman.

I’m happy to report that my re-read of Gods Behaving Badly was a good one. I’d mentioned that I was concerned I wouldn’t enjoy it as much this time around, but I’m happy to say it has mostly held up. It would’ve made a great series, and I’m sorry that the author never pursued that route.

I’m now moving on to Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman. This is one of the rare cases where I’ve seen the movie before reading the book. Since I love the movie, however, I’m really excited to finally be getting to the book.

(PS: In other news, I got my second covid shot. Who would have thought that something like a vaccine would be cause for celebration in our lifetimes? But then again, who would’ve thought we’d be going into year 2 of a pandemic? We owe a debt of gratitude to all the researchers and scientists– and volunteer test subjects– who worked so hard to get us a vaccine as quickly as they did. And also to everyone stepping up and getting the vaccine. Being vaccinated not only stops the spread and protects those who legitimately can’t get vaccinated, but it also prevents new variants.)

Currently Reading, blog post by Aspasia S. Bissas. Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips. Greek Gods, Greek mythology.

The last book I read was purportedly a retelling of Faust, but seemed far more interested in Greek mythology (and conflating Hell with Hades, which is personally infuriating). So I thought I’d follow that up with a book that doesn’t pretend to be about anything other than Greek mythology. I read this several years ago and liked it at the time. I hope I’ll still like it.

I think this might be my last Terry Pratchett novel for a while. There are some authors, like Pratchett and Douglas Adams, that you have to be in the right mood to read, and I just haven’t been in that mood. There’s a good chance I’ll come back to Discworld, though, as I hate the thought of starting a series and not finishing it!
