Given the fear of (and fascination with) vampires that humans have had since pretty much all of recorded history, it’s no real surprise that they’ve featured in art, along with literature, film, and music. While most of us are familiar with the pop culture images of vampires, I think many are far less so with the depictions in fine art. Here are a few examples of vampires in art– enjoy…

In early vampire mythology, one of the ways vampires would kill their victims would be to sit on them and crush them or steal their breath. There’s a fair bit of overlap in the mythologies of vampires, nightmares, and incubi/succubi.

  1. I don’t have a favourite classical painting, but I find a lot of the artwork from Vampire: The Masquerade (Revised Edition- the one I was introduced to!) very evocative. Especially the work of Tim Bradstreet and Vince Locke.

      1. Hahahahaha! I hadn’t thought of that! He wouldn’t pose nicely, though. He would just sniff the picture and then flash his rear end at the camera. 😬
