“The Vampire II” by Edvard Munch

Given the fear of (and fascination with) vampires that humans have had since pretty much all of recorded history, it’s no real surprise that they’ve featured in art, along with literature, film, and music. While most of us are familiar with the pop culture images of vampires, I think many are far less so with the depictions in fine art. Here are a few examples of vampires in art– enjoy…
“The Vampire” by Phillip Burne-Jones

I couldn’t resist sharing this photo of the artist with a cat:

Okay, back to the vampires…
“Lamia” by John William Waterhouse

“Le Vampire” by R. de Moraine

“Vampire Woman” by Michael MacNeill

“The Kiss” by Ambrogio Alciat

In early vampire mythology, one of the ways vampires would kill their victims would be to sit on them and crush them or steal their breath. There’s a fair bit of overlap in the mythologies of vampires, nightmares, and incubi/succubi.
“The Nightmare” by Henry Fuseli

I don’t have a favourite classical painting, but I find a lot of the artwork from Vampire: The Masquerade (Revised Edition- the one I was introduced to!) very evocative. Especially the work of Tim Bradstreet and Vince Locke.

What if one’s vampire isn’t in art, but in real life? Asking pour un ami.

Then the vampire is a living work of art 🙂 Curious now– have you ever considered having a portrait of Le Roi painted?

You need a picture of him with it (if you don’t already have one) 😀

Hahahahaha! I hadn’t thought of that! He wouldn’t pose nicely, though. He would just sniff the picture and then flash his rear end at the camera. 😬

Lol That sounds about right for a cat 🙂

An interesting selection! Not as prevalent in art as one might have thought but I bet that has changed massively in the last 75 years!

There’s so much contemporary art! But I wanted to stick to general vampires rather than specific characters. Perhaps there’s another art post in my future? 🙂
